The History of the Tow Truck

The tow truck is a vehicle that is used for towing or transporting vehicles that are disabled or have been in an accident. Tow trucks have been around since the early 1900s and their popularity has grown exponentially since then.

The first tow truck was designed in 1916 by Ernest Holmes, Sr., who was a garage owner in Chattanooga, Tennessee. His design was inspired by a racecar that he had seen at a local track. The first tow truck was a flatbed style with a winch on the back. It could only tow one car at a time and it wasn't until 1918 that the first multiple car carrier was invented.

Tow trucks became increasingly popular in the 1920s as more and more people began to drive. With the increase in car ownership came an increase in accidents and disabled vehicles. Tow trucks were essential in helping to clear the roads and keep traffic moving.

The 1930s saw the development of the first motorized tow truck. This new type of tow truck was much faster and could tow multiple vehicles at the same time. Tow truck companies began to spring up all over the country as the demand for their services grew.

The 1940s were a time of war and many tow truck companies were enlisted to help with the war effort. They were used to transport supplies, equipment, and even troops. After the war, tow truck companies continued to grow in popularity and size.

Today, there are thousands of tow truck companies operating all over the world. Tow trucks are now used for a variety of purposes including towing disabled vehicles, transporting vehicles that have been in an accident, and even assisting with law enforcement.
